You must have noticed the chains attached to each carriage while riding a train. These chains are needed to stop the train in an emergency. Again, if you pull the chain without any reason, then you will have to pay a fine and be punished. But do you know how a huge train stops by pulling just one chain?
How does a ‘brake chain’ work
According to a report by NDTV, this chain of the train is called a brake chain. This chain was designed by British engineer George Westinghouse about 150 years ago.
Each brake chain of the carriage is basically connected to the main brake air pipe of the train. The air pipe stores air that helps the train move.
When someone pulls the chain, the mouth of the brake pipe opens and the air is released.
The speed of the train then starts to slow down. At the same time, the train driver sees that the air pressure is decreasing and the meter is going down.
The train driver informs the safety staff by blowing a whistle and is forced to apply the emergency brake.
